Yesterday the four awesome ladies at Petal and Forrest had a cocktail reception to introduce people to their new space in Haslett (just outside Okemos and very close to East Lansing). It’s clear that they love bright, vibrant color, which is one reason I love them. They are also awesome because they know how to put together an awesome event! I can’t recommend them enough for your wedding or event planning!

They were kind enough to invite me with no expectation of bringing my camera, but it tends to go with me everywhere, so of course I had to take a few shots in between sipping wine, eating delicious food, listening to live music, and meeting new people:

This past weekend I provided photography coverage for a brunch and speaking engagement with Richard Dawkins. Richard is a best-selling author on both evolutionary science and atheism, so it struck me as an interesting contrast with the last large event I covered which was for a food drive put on by about 30 local churches. It is wonderful that we have freedom of speech and assembly where these starkly contrasted events can coexist in peace. A few photos below from the brunch, then soon I’ll get some up from the sold out lecture at MSU’s Wharton Center.

As a follow up to my last post and getting another phone call today asking about a date for which I already have a serious inquiry, I have realized the need for an official policy on holding dates.

Temporary Holds: Most photographers operate purely on a first-come-first-serve basis for booking dates and it remains open to anyone until there is a signed contract and paid retainer. I feel this can place too much pressure on a quick decision, so my policy includes a one week cushion. No date is held until a consultation is made, but after a consultation the date is temporarily held for seven days.

Booking a Date: A permanent reservation for your date is not made until Brett Maxwell Photography has received both a signed contract and paid retainer.

Availability FAQ:
What about portrait availability?  Unlike weddings and other large events, portrait sessions are typically scheduled only a few weeks before the shoot, and are generally much more flexible with scheduling.  It will be very unlikely to schedule a portrait session for a Saturday between May and October.  For portrait scheduling information please contact me.

If there is a temporary hold on my date, can I still arrange a consultation?  Yes, and this will give you the best chance at booking the date if the original couple remains undecided or decides against.

Will you book two weddings or events on the same day?  I will not book more than one wedding on a day, though in some instances it will be possible to book two events, or in very rare instances one wedding and one event.

I am unavailable for a consultation this week but want to learn more about your servies and get a temporary hold, what can I do?  No holds are made without a consulation, which are generally in person.  However I understand some people are contacting me from out of state, or have very difficult schedules.  If you are unable to make an in-person consultation, I would be happy to have one over the phone or online video chat.

I set up a photobooth for the Riverview Christmas party this past weekend and captured a few hundred images of fun. Some of these images will be reserved for blackmail, while here are sixty-some favorites:

The Avett Brothers concert was a-ma-zing.  I was having fun doing photography, but at least once a song I would just put my cameras down and listen for a verse.
