shooting style Dec 31
People often ask me what my shooting style is and I often struggle to define myself. “Wedding Photojournalism” is a term that gets thrown around a lot these days (and this post is mostly wedding related). A large association dedicated to this style summarizes this way:
Wedding Photojournalism is characterized by its candid, creative and natural results spanning serious to humorous scenes. While traditional wedding photography dictates the setting, a wedding photojournalist documents the moment as it naturally happens.
I love that description, but it still isn’t complete. In the strictest sense, this style would now allow for any posed shots at all. My style through a ceremony and reception is strict photojournalism, but you will likely catch me before or after moving a decoration or two around to create a nice detail shot. I also enjoy taking the bridal party for some posed shots, but “posed” is probably not the best word. You won’t find me saying “okay, chin up a little, that’s good, now smile… 1… 2… 3…” Ugh. No way. My idea of posing shots is arranging a person, couple, or group with great lighting and see what happens. I may ask a groom to kiss or talk with his bride, or a group to “look off that way”, but my focus is still on capturing moments of natural personality and emotion.
This is just a brief description of my shooting style, and it really only addresses the stuff going on outside the camera. At some point I will post about my shooting style inside the camera; the things that catch my attention and shots I love to take.
